The FSSAI has issued an advisory to the state food safety commissioners, regional directors and Central licensing authorities to ensure effective implementation of the plastic waste management rules under their jurisdiction.
The senior officials were asked to instruct food safety officials or designated officers to make sure that these rules were followed under their jurisdiction.
“It is requested to instruct the concerned food safety officers and designated officers under your respective jurisdiction to ensure effective compliance with the (plastic waste management) rules to ensure no packaging films are used to wrap/pack sweet boxes by any food business operator,” reads the advisory.
According to FSSAI, the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change has notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules 2021, which prohibit manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items for candy sticks, ice creams sticks, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron and stirrers, which have low utility and high littering potential with effect from July 1, 2022.
Meanwhile, the FSSAI has also asked the state officials to organise a special drive to ensure self-compliance of the rules by the food businesses.
