In a recent initiative to strengthen food safety within the rapidly growing e-commerce sector, the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted a meeting with online Food Business Operators (FBOs) on November 12, 2024. Chaired by FSSAI’s CEO, the session focused on enforcing compliance measures that prioritize consumer health and transparency in online food sales.
The CEO emphasized the need for e-commerce FBOs to ensure a minimum of 30 percent or 45 days of remaining shelf life at the point of delivery. This regulation aims to improve product freshness and protect consumers from receiving food items nearing expiration. FBOs were also cautioned against making unsupported health or nutritional claims to prevent misinformation, with the CEO underscoring the responsibility of online platforms to ensure accuracy in product information.
A critical mandate reiterated during the meeting was that no food business can operate on an e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or registration. Additionally, the CEO outlined that all product claims on these platforms must be consistent with the product labels in accordance with FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations.
To promote safe food handling, FSSAI advised FBOs to implement comprehensive food safety training for delivery personnel. These programs are designed to instill proper hygiene protocols and ensure food and non-food items are handled separately during delivery, minimizing cross-contamination risks.
The session saw active participation from over 200 attendees, both in-person and virtually, reflecting the industry’s commitment to aligning with FSSAI’s standards. In his closing remarks, the CEO called for diligence in upholding these standards, highlighting that a transparent, compliant e-commerce food sector is essential for safeguarding consumer health and fostering trust in digital marketplaces.
This meeting marks a proactive step by FSSAI to ensure that food safety standards are adhered to rigorously, reinforcing the commitment to protecting public health in the evolving landscape of online food retail.
