The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has established new standards for non-bovine milk, covering goat, camel, and sheep milk. These regulations are outlined in sub-regulation 2.1.2 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives), ensuring safety and quality for consumers.
National Livestock Mission and Entrepreneurship Development Programme
Since 2021, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, has been implementing the National Livestock Mission (NLM) to support livestock farming. Under the NLM-Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP), financial assistance is provided to individuals and organizations to establish livestock farms and feed units.
The programme offers a capital subsidy of 50% (up to Rs 50 lakh) for setting up farms for poultry, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, camels, and donkeys. Eligible beneficiaries include:
- Individuals
- Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)
- Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
- Joint Liability Groups (JLGs)
- Farmer Cooperative Organizations (FCOs)
- Section 8 companies
Implementation in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana
Uttar Pradesh
- 145 projects approved under NLM-EDP
- Rs 32.91 crore sanctioned as subsidy
- 846 individuals provided employment
- 5,978 farmers supported
- Annual fodder production capacity: 28,000 MT
- Induction of livestock: 30,371 animals and 2,200 poultry birds
Haryana (Sonipat District)
- 13 projects approved
- Rs 4.06 crore sanctioned as subsidy
- 62 individuals employed
- 144 farmers benefited
- Annual fodder production capacity: 2,400 MT
- Induction of livestock and poultry birds: 3,940
The initiative aims to enhance livestock farming, improve fodder availability, and provide economic benefits to rural farmers. These developments, along with FSSAI’s new standards for non-bovine milk, mark a significant step towards strengthening India’s dairy and livestock sector.
