Aldi is raising a glass to sustainability with the launch of the UK’s first own-label aluminium wine bottle, marking a major milestone in eco-conscious packaging for the supermarket sector.
Hitting shelves on April 14, the Costellore Pinot Grigio comes in a sleek aluminium bottle that weighs just 95g—around 75% lighter than traditional glass bottles. This dramatic weight reduction cuts transport emissions significantly, saving over 5 tonnes per truckload—roughly the weight of a small elephant.
Fully recyclable and filled at a sustainably powered UK winery, the wine is sourced directly from Italy. The crisp, zesty Pinot Grigio features refreshing notes of lemon and orchard fruits, pairing beautifully with seafood, white meats, creamy sauces, or pasta dishes.
This launch follows Aldi’s recent accolade as ‘Sustainable Drinks Retailer of the Year’ at The Drinks Retailing Awards. The recognition reflects the supermarket’s consistent push for greener alternatives, including past innovations like super-lightweight glass bottles and own-brand paper bottle wines.
With this aluminium bottle debut, Aldi continues to lead the charge in making wine packaging smarter, lighter, and kinder to the planet.
