Amul, the iconic Indian dairy brand, is set to embark on a new journey with its expansion into the European market. This comes after the brand’s highly successful launch of milk in the United States, marking another historic milestone in its global growth.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul and the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), made the announcement during the 11th Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration in Jamshedpur. Speaking on the topic of “Amul Model: Transforming Lives of Millions,” Mehta emphasized the significance of this move, stating that Amul’s success in the US has paved the way for the brand to enter Europe—a landmark moment for Indian dairy.
Amul has always been more than just a dairy business. As Mehta pointed out, “Dairy isn’t just a business—it’s a lifeline for rural India.” Founded by Dr. Verghese Kurien, the cooperative model has empowered millions of farmers, transforming the lives of people in rural India and turning the country into the world’s largest milk producer. Currently, Amul collects over 310 lakh litres of milk daily from 107 dairy plants across India, offering over 50 products. With a staggering 22 billion packs sold annually, Amul’s cooperative model continues to fuel its growth, both domestically and globally.
The expansion to Europe is part of Amul’s broader vision to remain relevant by offering protein-rich, organic, and chemical-free products. In his speech, Mehta highlighted how Amul continues to invest in capacity and infrastructure while maintaining the trust of its customers. He praised Dr. Kurien’s belief in cooperation, stating, “If India could offer a gift to the world, it would be the cooperative working system—a gift Dr. Kurien gave us.”
Amul’s journey from being a small cooperative to becoming the world’s strongest dairy and food brand, with a turnover of Rs 80,000 crore, is a testament to the power of cooperation. Owned by 36 lakh farmers, the brand remains committed to empowering rural India and bringing the best of Indian dairy to the world.
Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr. Verghese Kurien, reflected on her father’s legacy, noting how he dreamt that India, once a milk-deficient country, could one day become self-sufficient. Today, that dream has been realized, with India standing tall as the largest milk producer globally. As Amul prepares to take on the European market, it continues to build on that legacy, bringing the taste of India to even more corners of the world.
Amul’s journey is a reminder that a cooperative spirit, when nurtured and developed, can bring about a revolution—one that changes lives and creates lasting global impact.
