The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), known for its iconic ‘Amul’ brand, has announced a major investment of Rs 600 crore to establish an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. The new facility will feature the world’s largest curd (dahi) manufacturing plant, with a daily production capacity of 10 lakh kg, as confirmed by GCMMF’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta.
Investment Commitment at Bengal Global Business Summit
The announcement was made during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025, which concluded on February 6. The summit attracted investment proposals worth over Rs 4.40 lakh crore for West Bengal.
“We will be setting up an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. The new facility will have the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant with a capacity of 10 lakh kg per day,” said Mehta. The plant will also have a total milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day to meet the rising demand for dairy products in Kolkata and its surrounding areas.
GCMMF’s Growth and Expansion Plans
GCMMF, the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, is witnessing strong growth. The company’s turnover increased by 8% in the 2023-24 financial year, reaching Rs 59,445 crore. It expects double-digit revenue growth this fiscal, driven by strong consumer demand for dairy products.
The cooperative handles an average of 310 lakh litres of milk per day and has an annual milk processing capacity of approximately 500 lakh litres. With a network of 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat, GCMMF continues to strengthen its procurement and distribution capabilities.
Amul’s Global Expansion
Beyond the domestic market, Amul has successfully expanded its global footprint. It currently exports dairy products to around 50 countries. Recently, GCMMF entered the US market with four fresh milk variants aimed at the Indian diaspora and the broader Asian population.
With this substantial investment in Kolkata, Amul aims to enhance its production capacity and solidify its presence in the eastern region of India. The world’s largest curd plant, along with increased milk processing capabilities, is set to cater to the growing demand for dairy products while reinforcing Amul’s leadership in the industry.
