The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has been a transformative initiative, ensuring access to clean drinking water for rural households across India. Since its launch in 2019, the Mission has provided potable tap water connections to 15 crore households, covering 80% of India’s rural population. This is a remarkable achievement that has significantly improved the quality of life in villages, ensuring better health, hygiene, and socio-economic development.
Extension of Jal Jeevan Mission Until 2028
Recognizing the need to achieve full 100% coverage and sustain the progress made so far, the government is pleased to announce the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until 2028. This extension comes with an enhanced total outlay, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable drinking water access for every rural household.
Focus on Infrastructure Quality and Sustainable Operations
The next phase of JJM will emphasize not just the expansion of piped water connections but also the quality and sustainability of the infrastructure. A key priority will be the Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of rural piped water supply schemes, ensuring that these systems remain functional and effective over the long term.
Community Participation through “Jan Bhagidari”
To make the initiative more sustainable and citizen-centric, the Mission will actively promote “Jan Bhagidari” (community participation). This approach ensures that local communities are directly involved in the planning, execution, and maintenance of water supply schemes. By empowering gram panchayats and village water & sanitation committees, the Mission will enhance accountability and long-term sustainability.
State and UT Collaborations for Effective Implementation
In an effort to strengthen the execution of JJM, the government will sign separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with individual states and Union Territories (UTs). These MoUs will outline specific commitments and responsibilities, ensuring efficient fund utilization, infrastructure development, and the maintenance of water supply systems. The agreements will serve as a structured framework to guarantee continuous and citizen-focused water service delivery.
A Vision for a Water-Secure Rural India
The extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission reaffirms India’s dedication to achieving universal access to clean drinking water. By focusing on infrastructure quality, community involvement, and state partnerships, the government is laying the foundation for a water-secure and healthier future for all rural households.
As we move forward, collective efforts from the government, local communities, and various stakeholders will be essential to ensuring that every rural home in India has access to safe and sustainable drinking water. The Jal Jeevan Mission remains a beacon of progress, driving India closer to its vision of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ (Water for Every Household).
