In a significant move towards promoting sustainability, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially amended its packaging regulations to permit the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food packaging.
The change, notified under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2025, marks a major policy shift, as FSSAI previously prohibited the use of recycled plastics for packaging food items.
With this amendment, recycled PET can now be used for packaging, storing, carrying, or dispensing food, provided it complies with national standards and specific guidelines that FSSAI will develop and publish. The regulatory authority emphasized that the use of recycled PET will be permitted only after these standards are set.
FSSAI’s move aligns with global trends in promoting circular economy practices and reducing plastic waste. However, food safety remains the top priority, and all recycled PET materials intended for food contact must strictly meet the prescribed safety standards and applicable regulations.
Detailed guidelines outlining safety, quality, and compliance criteria for recycled PET usage are expected to be released by FSSAI in the coming months.
This development is being seen as a progressive step that balances environmental concerns with consumer safety.
