In a significant stride toward enhancing food safety and hygiene in Mumbai, Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), convened a crucial meeting with Shri Bhushan Varsha Ashok Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Dr. K.H. Govindraj, IAS Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department. The meeting centered around implementing impactful strategies to address food safety challenges in India’s financial capital.
Expanding Training for Food Handlers
Recognizing the cultural and economic importance of street food in Mumbai, Shri Rao unveiled plans to expand the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) program. Over 8 lakh street food vendors and food business operators (FBOs) in the city have already been trained under this initiative. The CEO emphasized scaling up this number, particularly focusing on training street food vendors to raise hygiene standards across Mumbai’s bustling food streets.
Deploying ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ Vans
To tackle food adulteration effectively, FSSAI plans to introduce additional mobile food testing vans, aptly named ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ (FSWs). These vehicles will facilitate rapid, on-the-spot adulteration testing, ensuring the food consumed by Mumbaikars is safe and contaminant-free. The initiative aligns with FSSAI’s nationwide pre-festive surveillance drive, reinforcing the commitment to food safety during high-demand seasons.
Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets
Shri Rao discussed the potential development of designated hygienic food streets in collaboration with the BMC. These food streets will enable street food vendors to operate under strict hygiene standards, creating safe and vibrant culinary hubs for locals and tourists alike.
Promoting Health Clubs in Schools
Highlighting the importance of early education in food safety, FSSAI is also advocating for health clubs in Mumbai’s schools. These clubs aim to foster healthy eating habits and create awareness about food safety among children, nurturing a health-conscious generation.
A Collaborative Vision for Food Safety
The meeting underscored FSSAI’s dedication to partnering with local authorities to preserve Mumbai’s rich culinary traditions while setting new benchmarks for food safety and hygiene in India. These initiatives are poised to transform Mumbai into a model city for food safety, ensuring that its citizens and visitors can relish its diverse culinary offerings without compromising on health standards.
Mumbai is on track to becoming not only a hub of culinary delight but also a shining example of food safety and hygiene for the nation.
