Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has laid out Direction under Section 16(5) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 regarding operationalization of Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations regarding the standards of Packaged Drinking Water other than Mineral Water.
The apex body of food safety had framed the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations w.r.t. the values of Total Dissolved Solids, Calcium and Magnesium based on the recommendations of the Scientific Panel/Committee. In exercise of the power conferred under Section 92 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The draft amendment regulations are yet to get approval from the Food Authority. The final notification will take some more time.
FSSAI has decided to operationalize the following provisions of the above mentioned draft amendment with immediate effect. Meanwhile, to allow the FBOs to formulate Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water) it has been decided to operationalize the following provisions with immediate effect;
“Under sub-regulation 2.10.8 relating to the standards of Packaged Drinking Water,the Permissible Limits given in column (3) of the Sr. No. 5 of Table 2, Sr. No. 15 and 16 of Table 3 shall be substituted with the following.
- Total Dissolved Solids mg/l – 75 to 500
- Calcium as (Ca), Mg/l – 10 to 75
- Magnesium as (Mg),mg/l- 5 to 30
This has been issued with the approval of the competent authority in exercise of the power vested under the Section 18(2(d) read with 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
