In a significant move to strengthen India’s dairy sector, the Union Cabinet, led by Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Revised National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD). This Central Sector Scheme has received an additional ₹1000 crore, bringing the total budget allocation to ₹2790 crore for the period of the 15th Finance Commission cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26).
Modernizing Dairy Infrastructure for Sustainable Growth
The enhanced NPDD aims to modernize and expand dairy infrastructure, fostering sustained growth and increased productivity in the sector. The initiative will focus on:
- Upgrading milk procurement and processing capacity to meet growing domestic and export demands.
- Ensuring better quality control with new technology and improved testing labs.
- Boosting rural livelihoods by improving market access and value addition, leading to better pricing for farmers.
The scheme is expected to enhance the efficiency of the dairy supply chain, resulting in higher incomes for farmers and promoting rural development.
Key Contributors Driving Dairy Growth
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, led by Shri Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, played a key role in this initiative. The department’s efforts are set to fortify the dairy industry, which contributes over ₹17 lakh crore to the Indian economy annually, making milk the country’s largest agricultural crop.
Additionally, under the leadership of Shri Amit Shah, Hon. Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, the country is witnessing the positive impacts of White Revolution 2.0, driving transformative changes in the dairy sector through cooperatives and infrastructure development.
Empowering Dairy Cooperatives and Farmers
A crucial component of the revised NPDD, “Dairying through Cooperatives (DTC)”, will continue to support the sustainable growth of dairy cooperatives. The program focuses on:
- Strengthening production, processing, and marketing infrastructure for cooperatives.
- Expanding cold chain facilities to reduce milk wastage and enhance storage capacity.
- Providing farmers with better market access to ensure fair pricing through value-added products.
Socio-Economic Impact and Future Outlook
Since its implementation, the NPDD has already made a notable socio-economic impact by boosting farmer incomes, creating rural jobs, and enhancing dairy productivity. The revised program will further transform India’s modern dairy infrastructure by introducing new technologies, creating quality testing labs, and improving supply chain efficiency.
This initiative is poised to benefit millions of farmers and stakeholders, driving rural prosperity and making India’s dairy sector more resilient and globally competitive. With White Revolution 2.0 in full swing, the revised NPDD marks a significant step towards strengthening the cooperative model and building a robust dairy industry for the future.
