How You Will Make a Difference:
It’s a critical time for smart protein in India and globally. We’ve seen several exciting announcements and a promising beginning, with GFI India at the centre of these developments, but plenty of work remains to build a truly thriving industry and achieve our public and planetary health goals. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead GFI India’s Industry team; direct the organisation’s strategic priorities for our Industry initiatives; cultivate and solidify high-level relationships across industry stakeholders, scientific communities, academia, government agencies, and research bodies; represent and cement GFI India’s position as the expert authority on smart proteins in India; and, bring our work to the most influential audiences for building alliances and accelerating progress. The Industry Manager will be responsible for:
Lead programmatic and functional strategy for the Industry team
- Strategically lead GFI India’s Industry function, including setting and implementing an ambitious long term vision for enabling India’s smart protein industry, identifying opportunities for initiatives, and pursuing the top priorities for impact.
- Identify the barriers for the Indian smart protein industry and work to create the right ecosystem towards scaling and growth of the industry in India, focusing on the most important and tractable points in the supply chain and/or consumer demand.
- Oversee the generation of new research resources and all of the Industry team’s shared service functions and provide foundational guidance to the department’s key initiatives and projects.
- Work closely with the SciTech and Policy teams to develop and execute a mission-focused Industry strategy for India.
Strengthen high-impact industry partnerships:
- Build relationships with established companies (including food manufacturers, co-manufacturers, ingredient companies and distributors), influencing them to invest in smart proteins, produce and stock more and higher-quality smart protein products, and create new products.
- Work with manufacturers, co-manufacturers, industry associations and other key stakeholders in the smart protein supply chain to understand the opportunities and obstacles they perceive and share GFI’s technical, regulatory, and marketing resources.
- Build relationships with other stakeholders, as and when this is strategic for mission impact; these could include priority grocery stores, restaurants, and foodservice establishments, investors and financial institutions, entrepreneurs, and start-ups.
- Building communities and coalitions of organisations to champion the smart protein ecosystem, for example, by bringing together consortia to apply for grant funding.
- Prepare and deliver impactful presentations to key decision-makers across industry and policy.
- Being a thought leader by speaking at conferences, panel discussions, webinars, and other external engagements.
- Provide input towards proposals, projects, authoring reports, op-eds, and editorial contributions.
Lead and build capacity within GFI India’s Industry department:
- Manage all aspects of the Industry Department, including but not limited to supervising staff, working with operations to manage department spending, reporting, hiring, training, mentoring, and providing strategic leadership to ensure the highest impact activities are planned and prioritised.
- Guide and oversee progress in implementing key Industry projects, highlighting risks and escalating issues when necessary, to continually align with GFI India’s mission for the smart protein sector in India.
- Represent GFI India at global team meetings, sharing and exchanging best practices with global colleagues, coordinating global activities and initiatives, and stewarding GFI India’s work with GFI’s Industry team for global projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

GFI India staff enjoy high levels of autonomy and must be self-motivated, work well both independently and in concert with a larger group, and be comfortable working with a rapidly evolving and growing team.
An ideal candidate for the Industry Manager position will have experience that reflects the following:
Knowledge and experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as economics, business, food systems, food technology, supply chain management, life sciences, etc, with a preference for Master’s degree holders.
- 8+ Years of relevant experience, preferably in the food industry, life science industry, corporate affairs/management/engagement, supply chain management, or other relevant areas with experience in setting and leading programmatic strategy, leading and managing teams, and delivering end-to-end strategic initiatives.
- An established rapport with a broad range of agri and food industry contacts would be preferred.
- Excellent people skills: the ability to influence, network, and build alliances and the confidence and authority to engage with corporate executives, build long-term relationships with them, and persuade and influence decision-makers.
- Fluency in English and Hindi is required.
- Conversational proficiency in other regional languages would be advantageous.
Skills and behavioural attributes:
- Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, hunger relief, or animal protection; and the drive and initiative to take responsibility for delivering impact.
- Excellent written and verbal communications and organisational skills, with experience in and comfort with communicating with a range of stakeholders.
- The demonstrated ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and in oral presentations to a range of audiences.
- Strong work ethic and ability to see projects through to completion.
- Highly effective organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work well independently under pressure.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet competing deadlines.
- Ability to work creatively and effectively as a team member.
- Comfort working remotely and in-person as required and in a rapidly growing and evolving organisation.
