The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has unveiled its ambitious plan to establish 100 new food testing laboratories across India in the upcoming financial year, aiming to bolster the nation’s food safety and quality standards.
In line with this initiative, a state-of-the-art food testing lab was inaugurated at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Technical University (MRSPTU) in Bathinda, Punjab. The facility, built at a cost of ₹2.89 crores, received a ₹2.53 crore subsidy from MOFPI. It is expected to significantly enhance the food quality monitoring and safety standards in Punjab’s Malwa region, which is a key agricultural hub.
Strengthening Food Safety in Punjab
The newly inaugurated lab is equipped with cutting-edge technology to conduct advanced testing, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and identifying contaminants. The facility will focus on:
- Testing for pesticide residues, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants
- Quality analysis of food products to meet domestic and export standards
- Ensuring safety in processed and packaged foods
Inauguration Ceremony
The inauguration event was graced by several key dignitaries, including Dr. Sandeep Kansal, Vice Chancellor of MRSPTU, Smt. Parampal Kaur, an industry representative, Dayal Sodhi, food safety expert, S. Ranjit Singh, Joint Secretary, MOFPI, Sh. Jitendra Dongare, MOFPI official
During the ceremony, Dr. Sandeep Kansal highlighted the lab’s critical role in ensuring food safety in the region, while Joint Secretary S. Ranjit Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the food processing sector with modern infrastructure.
MOFPI’s Nationwide Initiative
The establishment of 100 new food testing laboratories is part of MOFPI’s broader mission to:
- Enhance food quality assurance through regular testing
- Support the food processing industry by providing reliable lab services
- Ensure compliance with FSSAI regulations, reducing food safety violations
Impact on the Food Processing Sector
The new lab in Bathinda is expected to benefit local farmers, food processors, and exporters by ensuring that their products meet high safety standards. Additionally, it will promote agri-based entrepreneurship by providing certification and quality assurance services.
