NDDB Foundation for Nutrition (NFN) launched its flagship Giftmilk programme in Palamu district, Jharkhand with support from Yamaha Motor Solutions India Pvt. Ltd’s (Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.) CSR efforts. The programme aims to address malnutrition among school children by providing 200 ml of flavoured milk fortified with Vitamin A & D daily to 1,200 children in 12 government schools. The Jharkhand Milk Federation will ensure a steady milk supply for the initiative.

The programme was inaugurated at upgraded Girls High School, Chiyanki, Palamu by Shri Shashi Ranjan, Deputy Commissioner of Palamu, along with Shri Sudhir Kumar Singh, MD of JMF, Shri Randhir Kujur, DSE of Bokaro, Smt. Smriti Singh, Manager, NDDB, Shri Balwant Singh, Assistant Manager, Yamaha Motor Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. This collaboration between NFN and Yamaha Motor Solutions seeks to improve the health and well-being of children and support dairy farmers across the state.

ABOUT GIFTMILK

The Giftmilk programme is the first initiative of NFN wherein 200 ml of flavoured milk fortified with vitamin A and D (as per FSSAI standards) is distributed among government school children on all school working days through a dairy cooperative under CSR allocations.

The target group is mainly school children aged 5 to15 years in primary and upper primary classes from government schools or schools run for underprivileged children by NGOs and charitable organisations. NFN is leveraging the large network of 220 Milk Unions, 31 Marketing Dairies and around 1.94 lakh Dairy Cooperative Societies across India and expertise of NDDB for supply, logistics and monitoring.

Price of the ‘Giftmilk’ supplied is fixed at break-even point for the dairy cooperatives as their contribution to the society. Donations from corporates, PSUs, voluntary organisations, State Governments and individuals are channelised for support of the programme.  NFN acts as a liaising agency between Donor, Dairy Cooperative and beneficiary Schools to ensure proper implementation of Giftmilk.

NDDB to Implement “Giftmilk” Scheme to Improve Child Nutrition

The duty and functions of National Dairy Development Board are to promote, plan and organize programmers for the purpose of development of dairy and other agriculture based and allied industries and biological on an intensive and nation-wide basis and to render assistance in the implementation of such programs.

Government has approved a proposal for setting up an Institution for promotion of nutrition through milk/milk products (especially for children) utilizing Corporate Social Responsibility funds of NDDB’s subsidiaries and other voluntary donation. Subsequently , NDDB registered a trust/ society known as ‘NDDB Foundation for Nutrition’(NFN) to implement this initiative known as “Giftmilk” to improve child nutrition thought consumption of milk & milk products by providing milk free of cost. The supply of milk / milk product would be facilitated through dairy cooperatives only. NFN is currently implementing the “Giftmilk” imitative in 3 schools -2 in Delhi & 1 in Telangana, which have a total enrolment of about 3100 students. Till now about 1,20,000 packets of flavored milk have been distributed . The “Giftmilk” is presently supported by NDDB’s subsidiaries who have contributed fro their CSR commitment.

The NFN has been registered on 9 October 2015 in Gujarat under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act,1950. Further, NFN has been granted approved u/s 80G (5) of the Income Tax Act 1961.

NDDB is extending financial and technical support to dairy cooperatives. NDDB is implementing National Dairy Plan phase-1(NDP-1), a central sector scheme of Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India to increase milk production in the country. This information was given by the Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shri Sudarshan Bhagat in Lok Sabha today.
