Punjab Government has Banned the sale of Energy Drinks in Schools

In a landmark move to protect children’s health, Punjab has become the first Indian state to ban the sale of energy drinks in and around schools. The decision, announced on April 23, 2025, is part of the state’s intensified crackdown on drug and stimulant consumption among youth.

What the Ban Entails

The notification, issued by Dilraj Singh Sandhawalia, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prohibits the sale of energy drinks in school canteens, tuck shops, and any establishment within 100 meters of schools in rural areas and 50 meters in urban areas. The ban will be effective for one year starting April 21, 2025, under the authority granted by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Why the Ban?

According to the FDA, the move is “just and necessary” for public health, especially to keep children away from early exposure to high caffeine content found in energy drinks. These beverages typically include caffeine, guarana, taurine, ginseng, and other stimulants, which can pose serious health risks—especially when consumed regularly or mixed with alcohol or other substances.

The notification also highlighted concerns raised by the scientific community regarding:

  • High caffeine intake potentially leading to addiction.
  • The carry-over effect of fortified ingredients into commonly consumed children’s foods.
  • Adverse effects including cardiovascular, psychological, gastrointestinal, and renal complications.

The Bigger Picture: Fight Against Drugs

The ban is part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s larger campaign against drug abuse in Punjab. After setbacks in the Delhi Assembly elections, the state has launched aggressive actions, including demolishing drug peddlers’ properties and making numerous arrests. The Cabinet subcommittee on drug prevention, led by Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, strongly pushed for this move, citing that early caffeine dependency could pave the way for more dangerous addictions.

Legal Backing

The state ensured legal clarity before enforcing the ban. Experts confirmed that since many energy drink labels already state “not recommended for children,” the FDA Commissioner had sufficient authority to issue this restriction.

Looking Ahead

This decision sets a precedent for other states to follow. With rising concerns over the health effects of energy drinks and their aggressive marketing toward youth, Punjab’s proactive step could inspire a national conversation on caffeine regulation and youth wellness.
