UFlex Ltd., India’s largest multinational flexible packaging and solutions company, has announced a significant investment of ₹317 crore to establish two new recycling plants at its Noida facility. This strategic move comes on the heels of the company’s recent approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to utilize recycled polyethylene (rPE) in food packaging, marking a pivotal advancement in sustainable packaging solutions.
The forthcoming recycling units are designed to process a combined total of 39,600 metric tons of plastic waste annually. This capacity includes a Post-Consumer Recycle Polyethylene Terephthalate (PCR PET) recycling unit capable of handling 36,000 metric tons per annum (MTPA) of plastic bottles, and a Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP) unit with a 3,600 MTPA capacity. These facilities are slated to commence operations in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
UFlex’s recycling process is categorized as super-clean recycling, boasting the ability to de-ink post-consumer recycled materials by more than 95%. This positions the company among the global leaders in advanced recycling technologies. The USFDA’s approval underscores UFlex’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, aligning with international standards and contributing to the global shift toward a circular economy.
In addition to the Noida projects, UFlex is expanding its global footprint by investing approximately ₹435 crore ($50 million) in a woven polypropylene bags manufacturing plant in Mexico. This facility aims to cater to the burgeoning North and South American pet food packaging markets, which are projected to reach approximately $90 billion by 2025 and $135 billion by 2030.
Currently, UFlex operates recycling plants in India, Poland, Egypt, and Mexico, processing post-consumer multi-layered mixed plastic, multi-layer aseptic packaging, and polyethylene terephthalate waste. The company’s enhanced recycling capabilities are expected to empower brand owners to meet their Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) commitments and set a global benchmark in sustainable packaging.
Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, Whole Time Director, Director – Sustainability, President – Flexible Packaging and New Product Development at UFlex, stated, “In line with our commitment to support the Government of India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, we are proud to announce this significant investment to strengthen our recycling capabilities. The Indian government has set ambitious targets for the collection, recycling, reuse, and use of recycled content in plastic packaging to promote sustainable packaging. Our enhanced recycling operations will empower brand owners to meet their EPR commitments and set a global benchmark for sustainable packaging.”
This investment not only reinforces UFlex’s dedication to environmental sustainability but also positions the company at the forefront of the flexible packaging industry’s efforts to integrate recycled materials into food-grade packaging, thereby reducing plastic waste and supporting global sustainability goals.
