In a major push towards sustainable food packaging, Union Minister Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav launched India’s official rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) guidelines at the 2nd National Stakeholder Consultation on Sustainable Packaging for Food Business, held in Mumbai.
The event, organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, took place at the MMRDA New Administrative Building in Bandra Kurla Complex. It brought together industry leaders, scientists, and policymakers to discuss the future of safe and sustainable food packaging in India.
Key Highlights:
- Launch of rPET Guidelines: The guidelines set the stage for safer, eco-friendly packaging made from recycled plastics.
- Unveiling of the official FCM-rPET logo.
- Release of a new awareness video on FSSAI’s packaging regulations.
- Expert sessions on packaging trends, safety standards, and policy frameworks.
Minister Jadhav, in his keynote speech, stated:
“Sustainability and safety go hand in hand. Our initiatives through FSSAI are not just reforms—they are a revolution in the way India approaches food packaging.”
Experts Speak:
- Prof. Vimal Katiyar, Chairperson of FSSAI’s Scientific Panel on Packaging, explained how the 2018 Packaging Regulations support industry alignment with green goals.
- BIS Scientist Sachin S. Menon compared India’s standards with international benchmarks.
- Dr. Y. Sontakke, former CPCB director, emphasized the role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in reducing plastic waste.
- Dr. Vijay Habbu (AIPMA) shared insights on new technologies in sustainable packaging.
- Bharat Mehta from the PET Packaging Association highlighted the industry’s support in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Shailendra Singh, Director General of APR Bharat, stressed the importance of recycling for building a circular economy in India.
FSSAI Advisors Dr. Alka Rao and Pritee Chaudhary showcased key initiatives led by the authority to promote sustainability, food safety, and regulatory development.
