The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has gazette notified the Foods for Infant Nutrition Amendment Regulations wherein carbon dioxide and nitrogen have been approved as packaging gases.
Called the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) First Amendment Regulations, 2022, these regulations shall come into force on October 1, 2022.
According to the amendment, under regulation number 10 of the FSS (Food for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, the new entries were inserted as ‘Packaging Gases’ approving Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen under GMP in the sub regulation 2 related to additives that can be used in infant formulas.
The regulation number 10 was related to the composition of follow-up formula in powder or liquid form for infants after six months up to 24 months of age, wherein the product shall be nutritionally adequate to contribute to normal growth and development when used in accordance with its directions for use.
The amendment also notified a change in the parameters for vitamin B12 under the infant regulations.
Now for Vitamin B12, the requirements per 100 g shall be 0.25 – 4.0 µg and the requirements per 100 kcal shall be 0.05 –0.90µg for the infant formula and follow up formula regulations.
Also, the notified regulation stipulates that the labelling of the food for infant nutrition shall be in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
Further, the amendment says that ‘where an infant formula in powder format is manufactured without use of any vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, starch, specified food additive and optional ingredients, the product may be named as Infant Milk Food’.
