The 17th CII Food Safety Quality and Regulatory Summit being organised by CII in partnership with FSSAI has started on Thursday. The 3-day event was conceptualized around the theme of ‘Sustainable Growth with Food Safety, Quality, Innovation & Consumer Empowerment’.
According to the CII, the summit provides an opportunity for industry, government, Codex & global development bodies, academia, consumer bodies and related stakeholders to come together with a focus on addressing the Food Safety and Regulatory ecosystem through updates on critical and emerging opportunities and challenges.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the summit, Steve Wearne, chairperson, Codex Alimentarius Commission, stressed on the need for collaborative action on food safety and mentioned “Increasing impact through the recognition and use of Codex standard globally is one of the most emphasised goals of Codex Strategic Plan 2020-2025”.
Lawrence Haddad, chairperson, UNFSS Action Track -1 and executive director, The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) in his video address highlighted that 600 million people globally are affected by food-borne illnesses every year, and strengthening food safety measures is key, towards which consumer awareness is a major enabler.
In the context of the threat due to emerging pathogens impacting food safety, Dr Marcel Zwietering, chairperson, ICMSF Executive Committee mentioned, “data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, metagenomics, improved traceability and microbiome are some of the techniques to tackle food safety issues due to pathogenic microorganisms”.
Piruz Khambatta, CMD, Rasna Pvt Ltd, complimented the efforts of FSSAI towards creating a robust food regulatory regime in India which is being recognised globally while Mayank Jalan, co-chairman, CII National Committee on Food Processing Industries & chairman, Task Force on Food Regulatory Affairs & CMD, Keventer Agro Limited, mentioned that the industry is committed to working with Government on creating a safe food regime and CII is spearheading industry engagement closely with the regulator.
The inaugural session witnessed participation of several Commissioners and senior officials of Food and Drugs Administration from the states of Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and FSSAI and industries like Herbalife and Kellogg.
Over the next two days the summit has a line-up of sessions around Unlocking Potential of Ayurveda and Botanicals: Ensuring Food Safety, Efficacy, & Traceability; Role of Best in Class Start Ups in Smart Food Safety and Quality; and Microbiological Food Safety and CODEX Vision: Strategic Transformations in the Area of Food Safety Quality and Regulations.
